The 60th annual Halsey Invitational Volley Ball / Basketball Tournament was hosted by the Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi at the University of Minnesota February 10, 2018. The Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter kept with tradition and fielded a team for the recreational volley ball tournament.
Several alumni enjoyed a pre-weekend social hosted by Adam (one-time president of the DSM-CIA chapter, current TCAC president) at his home in the Twin Cities suburbs the Thursday before the tournament. The Friday before the tournament saw some social events (primarily in downtown St. Paul) organized by former Des Moines resident (and former Great Plains RVP, Jillian). These were great fun for those who arrived in town early.
Friday night at the hotel was a good time for alumni to reconnect and enjoy the host-chapter-sponsored activity of a casino night. Attendees could play blackjack and poker, exchanging their stash of chips for raffle tickets for the many prizes. The 2018 Halsey theme was “The Great Halsey” (which was a take on ‘The Great Gatsby’). The hotel was the newly-re-branded “Graduate Hotel” on the U’s campus, conveniently located next to the rec center where Saturday’s tournament was held.
The Des Moines Alumni Chapter volley ball team played hard and had fun, but lost its contest for a 3rd place finish after a late morning rally (having been creamed in its morning opener against a competitive team that was ‘filling in’ when a non-competitive team was a no-show).
Saturday night’s closing banquet was enjoyable and memorable. The food received good reviews. Speeches by PGP, Bill Tatum and the tournament’s namesake, Ken Halsey were well received. The evening’s emcee, Meagan, did a spectacular job with the night’s program. The ‘countdown’ conducted by PGP, Norm Kromberg was done by “the year of your first tournament attended”. Several alumni attended their first volley ball basketball many many years ago. Ken Halsey’s first was 1972. Kromberg mentioned this and several other interesting factoids regarding the tournament and its participants.
The banquet ended with special recognition of Ken and Erin Halsey featuring a video with photos, roses, and the signing of “The Rose of Deltasig” led by Des Moines Alumni Chapter member, Tom.
It was announced that the 2019 tournament will be held in St. Cloud, MN.
The Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi held its annual holiday tradition Saturday December 9. Several alumni brothers got together for the Ugly Christmas Sweater Party.
Thanks to Jody for hosting an excellent social event featuring a ‘Yankee Swap’ gift exchange, games, food, and drinks. Many brothers had never played the ‘meme’ card/party game ‘What Do You Meme?”. It was fun to play and lots of laughs were had.

Deltasigs partied like it was 1999 and the other years of the 1990s during the February 11, 2017 weekend for the 59th annual Halsey Invitational Volley Ball – Basketball Tournament. This year’s tournament was hosted by the Alpha Delta Chapter at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. The theme was Flashback to the 90s. There were approximately 260 registered in attendance.
The weekend started with a 90s-themed dance. Brothers were encouraged to wear their best 90s throwback outfits and could dance and play various games while listening to DJ Jillian (RVP) spin the 90s greatest hits. Many brothers stayed at the Embassy Suites downtown which featured a great breakfast and evening happy hour.
The hotel was only a 14 minute walk to Rec Center on campus where the tournament was held. The weather was unseasonably warm, making the walk quite enjoyable. But the walk wasn’t the only warm-up the Des Moines – Central Alumni Chapter volley ball team got. They also worked out on some of the rec center equipment!
In the end, DSM-CIA did not make the final, bracketed tournament, but of the 6, 11-point, rallied scored games they played (against 2 formidable oppenents) they won 3. Everyone on the team was very satisfied with its performance overall.
The Saturday night banquet was assigned seating, so Des Moines brothers sat among several tables, but the program was short and sweet and included comments from several notable alumni, awards (including the best t-shirt going to Theta Tau for their Space Jam-inspired design), and the anouncement of the 2018 tournament (the 60th) to be hosted by Alpha Epsilon in Minneapolis, MN.

The 57th Annual Halsey Invitational Volley Ball – Basketball Tournament was hosted by the Alpha Delta Chapter at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Lincoln, NE on February 28, 2015. The Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter was well represented with 9 members present. 6 alumni brothers from Des Moines fielded a volley ball team for the non-competitive volley ball tournament.
Although the Des Moines alumns failed to bring home a trophy for volley ball, everyone in attendance had a great weekend. Friday night entertainment included line dancing and square dancing (featuring an actual caller who provided some lessons to introduce Deltasigs to the dance-style). The event’s theme was “Home on the Halsey” (celebrating Lincoln’s Westernness). Participants stayed at the Holiday Inn in Downtown Lincoln, near the campus and right next to a large number of restaurants, bars, and entertainment.
The Saturday tournaments were a good time, held on the UNL campus in the Rec Center (a very nice facility).
The Saturday night banquet featured the usual awards, and merriment. Especially exciting was that the Alpha Iota Chapter of Drake University won the 2016 Halsey bid and will be hosting next year’s tournament in Des Moines!
Overall it was great bonding, great sporting, and excellent brotherhood in Lincoln.
2015 has officially started… with a good showing at the January Happy Hour. Many brothers had never been to G Mig’s (in Valley Junction) before. What they found were good drinks, narrow tables, warm popcorn, friendly service, and a fun time!
At the happy hour several important items were discussed including: LEAD in Iowa City. This event is only weeks away. Alumni are invited to a Friday 2/6 social at Backpocket Brewing from 6-8 pm in recognition of the Epsilon (UIowa) Chapter’s 95th anniversary. There will be an alumni table during the LEAD on Saturday 2/7 that registered alumni can visit to network with collegiate brothers. Contact the Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter or North Central Alumni Development Committee Chair, Teresa for more information.
Also discussed was Halsey coming up at the end of February.
