Two brothers from Des Moines traveled to the Twin Cities over the June 23, 2018 weekend to attend the annual Twin Cities Alumni Chapter (TCAC) Pig Roast.
Their annual tradition usually draws a good crowd, including roughly 6 dues-paying members of the Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter.
There were some changes for the 2018 event. The first was location. Instead of the Lakeville location, the event was held at Minnehaha Regional Park near the heart of Minneapolis, MN. And contrary to what some brothers (with a sense of humor) tell you, Minnehaha does not translate to “little laugh”.
The park featured many shelters (one of which was reserved for the event), trails, splash park, historic sites, food, bike rentals, and of course the picturesque Minnehaha Falls.
(The above photo is at the top of the falls. The photo below is below the falls.)
There was also a new caterer this year, and they did not disappoint. Pulled pork was fall-off-the-bone-tender. The BBQ sauces hit the spot. And there were several positive comments about the sides of mac & cheese, baked beans, and potato salad.
The weather this year was nearly perfect for the pig roast. Temps were in the upper 70s and mid 80s. Sky was clear. Brothers playing the fun yard games could have broke a sweat, but those socializing under the shelter stayed cool. All had a good time. Thank you, TCAC, for hosting another great event!
The Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi will kick off the new year with a happy hour in January. Check the ‘calendar’ page of this weblog for links to the FB events for the Thursday January 18 happy hour at Sully’s Irish Pub in West Des Moines. Make your New Year’s Resolution to join a group of local alumni brothers starting around 5:30 pm. There will certainly be discussion about upcoming events for 2018 including participation in the February Halsey Volley Ball and Basketball Tournament.
The award-winning Twin Cities Alumni Chapter (TCAC) has compiled a year-in-review PDF that can be found online here. Check it out to see what our neighbors to the North have accomplished in 2017. It features many good photos throughout its 8 pages.
Another thing to view or save is the Des Moines Business Record’s 2018 “Book of Lists” (online here). This publication notes many of the major employers, groups, boards, industries, etc. around central Iowa. Save it for handy reference during the year.
Several brothers from the Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi, made the annual pilgrimage to Lakeville, Minnesota (just south of the Twin Cities) for the TCAC pig roast.
The Twin Cities Alumni Chapter has hosted an annual summer pig roast going back many years in history. Recently the chapter has hosted this picnic for 6 years running.
Last week’s pig roast was a cold one. Temperatures were in the 50s and 60s with sprinkles on and off. Brothers kept warm with blankets and socialization under the shelter.
Excellent as usual, the pork hit the spot with the approximately 50-60 alumni and collegiate brothers in attendance.
Of special note was the attendance of Past Grand President, Mark Chiacchiari (of Ohio). Travel worked out that Mark and his family could stop by the picnic on their way home from a family vacation in California.
Thank you, TCAC for inviting Des Moines brothers to another great event!
Once again, the Twin Cities Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi hosted a summer pig roast (an annual tradition). The 2016 event was Saturday, June 25 at Antlers Park in Lakeville, Minnesota. Of the 48 people registered, 3 traveled from Des Moines. Also of note was 1 brother from Colorado and another from Nebraska. Several former central Iowa residents who now live in the twin cities attended the pig roast.
The food was excellent. Divine Swine was the caterer (same as in recent years).
There were many yard games played and much fun was had that afternoon. And there were even brothers who went swimming at the beach! The weather was very hot for the picnic and there had been some storms in the area the night before.
A great time was had by everyone in attendance. Including those brothers from Des Moines! Thank you, TCAC.
Mark your calendars with a few items of note from the Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi.
Coming up soon is the monthly happy hour. Thursday, March 24 we will be gathering at The Chicken Coop in West Des Moines. Check out the calendar page of the Weblog and FB for all the details. Everyone should have had plenty of time to recover after NCAA madness in Des Moines and St. Patrick’s day, so this is sure to be a great time watching basketball, swapping stories, and a few laughs.
Look for more info soon about the Alpha Iota Chapter (Drake University) annual alumni picnic. You don’t have to be a Drake grad to attend. Mark your calendars for
Sunday, May 1 (11 AM – 1 PM) at MacRae Park just south of downtown Des Moines.
The National Fraternity Website had a news piece on great alumni events. Both the Lincoln/Great Nebraska alumni chapter and TCAC were noted for the great things they do. This includes the June 25 Pig Roast (as noted on the calendar page of the Weblog).
The Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi has been having a fun Summer. Last week, the July Happy Hour was a great success.
Several members of the chapter got together at the new Daught House 50 on Mills Civic in West Des Moines. While the parking lot was crowded, there were still some empty tables inside, including the gigantic one brothers gathered around. The garage doors that opened up the restaurant to the patio seating around it were sealed up due to the day’s high temperatures, and very few people were taking advantage of the outdoor seating. Discussion was fun, and the food was good quality.
Last weekend a few Des Moines alumni took a weekend trip to Minneapolis, MN to attend the annual Summer Pig Roast hosted by the Twin Cities Alumni Chapter.

Deliciously catered by Divine Swine, and held in a shelter at Antlers Park in Lakeville, MN, this event was excellent as usual. There were about 50 alumni, collegiate, family, and friends in attendance… and at least one dog! Brothers played some yard games, enjoyed the park grounds, socialized, and ate some great food. Many in attendance at the pig roast talked about their plans to attend Grand Chapter (less than 4 weeks away). Earlier forecasts had called for chances of thunderstorms, but the weather stayed sunny for the entire event. Thank you TCAC for executing another great pig roast and inviting Des Moines brothers to join in the fun.

The extremely viral Ice Bucket Challenge has found its way to Delta Sigma Pi. Benefiting the ALS Association by raising awareness and money, millions of people (including brothers in Delta Sigma Pi) have been recording themselves dumping ice water on their heads.
According to their website, “As of Wednesday, August 27, The ALS Association has received $94.3 million in donations compared to $2.7 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 27). These donations have come from existing donors and 2.1 million new donors. The ALS Association is tremendously thankful for all of the generous support and awareness that this summer phenomenon has generated for the cause.”
Thursday 8/21 TCAC participated in the challenge and nominated several other alumni chapters, including Des Moines – Central Iowa.
Saturday 8/23 Jillian of the Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter took up the challenge and nominated Jodi.
On Monday 8/25 Jodi accepted the challenge and encouraged all brothers to continue charitable giving to the causes important to them.
