Virtual service event and happy hour

September saw a virtual happy hour and community service event for the Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi. As Iowa became a top-3 hotspot for coronavirus, the September happy hour was moved onto Zoom.

Held September 17, several alumni brothers gathered virtually to catch up, share fraternity news, and even hear a little ukulele playing! An enjoyable time was had by all.

Being unable to physically go to the local Ronald McDonald House at Iowa Methodist Hospital this year, the chapter took to raising money to purchase frozen meals for the temporary residents there to enjoy.

Community Service at Ronald McDonald House

The Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi held a great community service event Sunday, September 29, 2019 at the Ronald McDonald House of Central Iowa. 2019 was the 2nd year of holding this event, after a successfully serving in this way in 2018.

The brothers came together in the afternoon to prepare, cook, and deliver an evening meal, capable of serving 50 guests of the Ronald McDonald House. The meal chosen was a Jambalaya with Summer Squash. Brothers enjoyed making this tasty, spicy dish (except for when too many airborne spices caused everyone to start coughing!). The jambalaya turned out well, as did the cupcakes that were baked for dessert. A good time was had by all who participated and the service was greatly appreciated.

Coming up in October is the next Happy Hour Thurs. Oct. 24 at Hessen Haus downtown.

New Taproom, ARL Community Service

Three alumni brothers took part in a 4-hour shift preparing gourmet apples for the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Iowa to sell as a fundraiser. According to their website, “The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is Iowa’s largest nonprofit animal shelter, caring for many thousands of pets each year. The ARL serves people and pets from across the state of Iowa through its programs, which include pet adoption, humane education, pet behavior training, spay/neuter, animal cruelty intervention and much more.”

Brothers didn’t get to interact with any of the animals that Saturday, but they did make a difference in helping a quality organization raise money to fund its charitable mission.

The next Wednesday, February 8, the chapter got together for its February, monthly happy hour.

Several local alumni brothers visited one of the newest taprooms in the metro at New American brewing Co. in Ankeny, Iowa. There was much socialization and some planning for the Halsey Volley Ball and Basketball tournament that weekend. New American had several of their own beers on tap while also featuring many other beers from different local breweries. One brother noted that their pale ale rated pretty well. New American’s Ankeny taproom is located in the new-ish Prairie Trail district in the neighborhood of Jethro’s Lakehouse and Fong’s Pizza.

Alumni Clean Up for ‘Make a Difference Day’

The Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi took part in community service work for Make a Difference Day. While the official MADD is October 22, five brothers from the alumni chapter gathered with countless other volunteers Sunday, October 23 to volunteer to cleanup the Drake Stadium after the annual Reggie’s Sleepout event.

Reggie’s Sleepout is an annual fundraiser for Iowa Homeless Youth Centers.
The cleanup took most of the morning and consisted of breaking down cardboard boxes (used to construct homeless shelters on the football field) and loading the cardboard and other materials into a facilities garbage truck. Among the many volunteers for this cleanup were several members of the Alpha Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi at Drake University, where the annual event is held.

Volunteer as Part of ‘Make a Difference Day’

The Des Moines – Central Iowa Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Pi will be lending a helping hand on “Make a Difference Day”. Although the day technically falls on Sat. 10/22, central Iowa brothers are invited to band together Sunday, October 23 for the cleanup shift from the Reggie’s Sleepout event held at the Drake Stadium on the Drake University Campus.
